DNA sexing using a dried blood spot on paper involves extracting DNA from the blood sample collected on the a plain piece of white paper or an index card.

Next, the DNA is isolated from the blood sample using various extraction methods to purify the genetic material. Once the DNA is extracted, specific genetic markers on the sex chromosomes, like the CHD-Z and CHD-W genes, are amplified using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Overall, DNA sexing from a dried blood spot on a plain piece of white paper or an index card is a reliable and efficient method for determining the sex of an individual for various applications, such as gender determination in newborn screening or wildlife conservation.

How to collect a blood spot sample
  1. Clip the very tip of one toenail, just far enough to get a drop of blood.
  2. Touch the drop onto a plain piece of white paper or an index card and let it soak in.
  3. Let the spot dry completely, about ten minutes.
  4. Write the bird's name or number next to the spot and fold the paper into an envelope.
  5. Mail it to us in a regular stamped envelope.

A drop the size of a pea is plenty. No vet visit, no kit needed from us.
