Bird DNA Testing and Avian DNA Sexing
What the test reads, what sample to send, and what comes back.
Bird DNA testing uses PCR to read a bird’s own genetic material from a small sample. The two things owners and breeders ask for most are sex and color or trait genetics.
🧺 How avian DNA sexing works
Unlike mammals, female birds are the ones with two different sex chromosomes: females are ZW, males are ZZ. The test amplifies a region that differs between the Z and W chromosomes, so the result is read directly from the bird’s DNA rather than inferred from appearance. That matters because the majority of bird species are monomorphic, meaning males and females look identical for life.
✉ What sample to send

| Feather | Any feathered bird | Freshly plucked chest or wing feather with the soft base attached. Molted feathers off the floor usually do not carry usable DNA. |
| Blood | Very young or lightly feathered birds | A drop on paper or in a vial. |
| Eggshell | Sexing at hatch | From a hatched egg. Eggshell instructions. |
| Swab | Disease screening | Oral, choanal, or cloacal. Swab instructions. |
You collect the sample yourself and mail it in a plain envelope. We do not ship collection kits, so nothing has to arrive before you can start. Samples are held for one week after testing.
🌎 Species we test
Over 2,000 species. In practice that covers chickens and other poultry, ducks and geese, swans, ratites such as emu and ostrich, birds of prey, and companion parrots including cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, conures, African greys, macaws, and cockatoos.
⏳ Turnaround and results
Testing takes 2 to 3 business days from the day samples arrive at the lab. Results appear in your Pullidex account with a downloadable certificate showing the order number and the dates the order was placed and results were entered.
