Avian DNA Testing Guide
Bird DNA Testing and Avian DNA Sexing
What the test reads, what sample to send, and what comes back.
Bird DNA testing uses PCR to read a bird’s own genetic material from a small sample. The two things owners and breeders ask for most are sex and color or trait genetics.
🧺 How avian DNA sexing works
Unlike mammals, female birds are the ones with two different sex chromosomes: females are ZW, males are ZZ. The test amplifies a region that differs between the Z and W chromosomes, so the result is read directly from the bird’s DNA rather than inferred from appearance. That matters because the majority of bird species are monomorphic, meaning males and females look identical for life.
✉ What sample to send
| Sample | Best for | Notes |
| Feather | Any feathered bird | Freshly plucked chest or wing feather with the soft base attached. Molted feathers off the floor usually do not carry usable DNA. |
| Blood | Very young or lightly feathered birds | A drop on paper or in a vial. |
| Eggshell | Sexing at hatch | From a hatched egg. Eggshell instructions. |
| Swab | Disease screening | Oral, choanal, or cloacal. Swab instructions. |
You collect the sample yourself and mail it in a plain envelope. We do not ship collection kits, so nothing has to arrive before you can start. Samples are held for one week after testing.
🌎 Species we test
Over 2,000 species. In practice that covers chickens and other poultry, ducks and geese, swans, ratites such as emu and ostrich, birds of prey, and companion parrots including cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, conures, African greys, macaws, and cockatoos.
⏳ Turnaround and results
Testing takes 2 to 3 business days from the day samples arrive at the lab. Results appear in your Pullidex account with a downloadable certificate showing the order number and the dates the order was placed and results were entered.
🧬 What else DNA testing can tell you
Sex is the most common request, but the same feather or blood sample can be run for other traits.
- Color and pattern genetics. Whether a bird carries a recessive gene it is not showing, which is what breeders need before pairing. See chicken color and trait genetics.
- The blue egg gene. Whether a bird carries one copy, two, or none, which decides what shell color its daughters lay. See the blue egg gene.
- Disease screening. PCR panels for pathogens including Marek’s disease and mycoplasma, run from a swab. See chicken disease testing.
💵 What testing costs
Pricing is per bird, with no account fees and no charge for the collection materials because you supply them yourself.
| Sample type | Price | Best for |
| Feather | $9 per bird | Any bird that has feathered out. The most popular option. |
| Blood spot on paper | $9 per bird | Day-old chicks and lightly feathered birds. |
| Blood in a vial | $8 per bird | Samples drawn by a veterinarian. |
| Eggshell | $10 per egg | Knowing the sex at hatch. |
Bundles of 8, 25, 50, and 100 samples bring the per-bird cost down. Bundle credits are good for 90 days from the date of purchase, so plan to send your birds in as they hatch. If you need longer, email us before the 90 days are up and we are happy to extend it.
📧 How to send a sample
- Order the test that matches the sample you plan to send.
- Collect the sample yourself. For feathers, pluck three to five chest or body feathers so the soft base stays attached. Feathers picked up off the ground have usually lost their usable DNA.
- Label each sample with the bird name or number, put them in a plain envelope, and mail them to the lab at 740 Shaw Road, Bailey, MI 49303, United States.
- Fill out the submission form in your Pullidex account so we know which sample belongs to which bird.
We do not mail out collection kits, so there is nothing to wait for before you start. Turnaround is 2 to 3 business days from the day your samples arrive at the lab, results load into your Pullidex account with a downloadable certificate, and samples are held for one week after testing.
❓ Common questions about bird DNA testing
How accurate is DNA sexing compared to looking at the bird?
The test reads the chromosomes directly rather than inferring sex from appearance, so it is definitive where visual methods are an estimate. Most bird species are monomorphic, meaning males and females look the same for life, so for those species there is no visual method to compare against at all.
How long do I have to use my credits?
Credits are good for 90 days from the date of purchase. Orders that have not been used by then are closed out. If you need more time, email us before the deadline and we will extend it for you, no questions asked.
Can I use a feather I found in the coop?
Usually not. A molted feather has lost the soft pulp at the base, and that pulp is where the usable DNA is. Pull a fresh chest or wing feather from the bird instead and check that there is a visible fleshy tip.
Do you test parrots and other pet birds?
Yes. Cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, conures, African greys, macaws, and cockatoos are all routine, along with birds of prey and ratites. A single plucked chest feather is enough.
How do I get my results?
They appear in your Pullidex account 2 to 3 business days after your samples reach the lab, with a certificate you can download showing the order number and the dates the order was placed and the results entered.
What if the sample fails?
We tell you and retest a fresh sample at no extra charge. Sample quality is the usual cause, most often a feather without its base.
