Crowing Guide
When Do Roosters Start Crowing?
The realistic age range, why it varies so much, and what to do if you cannot wait.
Most cockerels start crowing somewhere between 16 and 24 weeks, so roughly four to six months old. That is the honest middle of the range, but the spread on either side is wide enough that a lot of people worry about a bird that is perfectly normal.
📅 The normal range
| Age | What is happening | How common |
| 6 to 10 weeks | A strangled squeak that barely counts as a crow | Uncommon but completely normal |
| 12 to 16 weeks | First real attempts, often awkward and short | Fairly common in fast maturing breeds |
| 16 to 24 weeks | Regular crowing settles in | The typical window |
| 6 to 8 months | First crow finally arrives | Normal in slow maturing and heavy breeds |
| Never | A submissive cockerel under a dominant one | Happens, and it fools people every year |
🤔 Why the spread is so wide
Breed
Light, fast maturing breeds such as Leghorns and most production layers often crow earlier. Heavy breeds like Orpingtons, Brahmas, and Cochins mature slowly and frequently wait past five months. Silkies and other bantam breeds are all over the map.
Flock order
This is the one most people miss. A young cockerel living under an older, established rooster often stays completely silent, sometimes for months. Remove or rehome the dominant bird and the quiet one may crow the same week. If you have kept a bird because it never crowed, that alone does not make it a pullet.
Season and daylight
Birds coming of age in short winter days tend to start later than birds hitting the same age in spring.
⚠️ Why waiting for a crow is an expensive way to sex a bird
Crowing is proof, but it arrives after four to six months of feed, and it arrives at the worst possible moment if you live under a rooster ordinance. By the time the bird announces itself, your neighbors hear it before you have decided what to do, and late summer is the hardest time of year to rehome a cockerel. Waiting also means you have grown out birds you would not have kept, at full feed cost, in coop space you needed for pullets.
It is also not a reliable negative. A silent 20 week old bird is not evidence of a pullet, for the flock order reason above.
🧬 Knowing at day one instead
A DNA test reads the sex chromosomes directly. Females are ZW and males are ZZ, so the answer is definitive from the day the chick hatches, regardless of breed, feathering, or comb type. Send a plucked feather with the soft base attached, a blood spot on plain paper for a very young chick, or the hatched eggshell.
You mail the sample in a plain envelope. There is no kit to order and wait for. Results come back 2 to 3 business days after your samples reach the lab and load into your Pullidex account. Bundles of 8, 25, 50, and 100 samples cover a whole hatch.
