How to Sex Silkie Chickens: Why It Is So Hard, and What Works

Silkie Sexing Guide

How to Sex Silkie Chickens

Why every normal shortcut fails on this breed, and what gives you a definitive answer.

Silkies are the breed people ask us about more than any other, because every shortcut that works on a normal chicken fails on a Silkie.

🧇 Why Silkies are different

Silkie feathering has no barbicels, so the feathers never lock together into the pointed, glossy saddle and hackle feathers that give a cockerel away in other breeds. The crest hides head shape. Both sexes have a walnut comb, and the dark skin makes comb reddening hard to read. Feather sexing does not apply, and vent sexing a Silkie chick is difficult even for professionals.

👀 The visual clues, and when they show up

Clue Shows up How much to trust it
Crest shape 8 to 12 weeks Pullets rounder, cockerels streamed back. Useful, not conclusive.
Comb and wattles 12 to 16 weeks Cockerels broader and brighter. Good, still not certain.
Behavior 10 weeks onward Confident pullets chest bump too.
Crowing or first egg 5 to 7 months Certain, and a long wait.

Even experienced Silkie breeders are regularly wrong at 12 weeks. That is the honest state of visual sexing in this breed.

🧬 DNA testing a Silkie

A DNA test reads the sex chromosomes directly, so feathering and comb type are irrelevant and the answer is the same at day one as at day one hundred. Send a feather with the base attached, a blood spot on paper, or the hatched eggshell.

Results are typically back 2 to 3 business days after your samples reach the lab. Most Silkie breeders test a whole hatch at once, which is what the 8, 25, 50, and 100 sample bundles are for.

🎨 While you are testing

Silkie breeders often run color genetics on the same bird at the same time, since the sample is already here. Common ones are the chocolate gene, the lavender gene, and fibromelanosis. If you are pairing dilutions, read chocolate versus mauve first.
