Find out if your bird carries Dominant White (I).

Dominant White blocks nearly all black pigment, which is what turns a genetically black bird white or leaves it with scattered black flecking. One copy is usually enough to show, so a white bird can be hiding a color you never see until it breeds.

What it reports:

  • Dominant White (I): 9-bp insertion in exon 10 of PMEL17
  • Wild type (i): no Dominant White mutation detected

How to collect a feather sample
  1. Pluck 3 to 5 growing feathers from the chest or back. Pull them out, do not cut them.
  2. Check that the soft quill tip is attached to each one. That tip holds the DNA, a cut feather will not work.
  3. Put each bird's feathers in their own labeled paper envelope or a small ziplock.
  4. Mail the envelopes to us in a regular stamped envelope.

*Please do not choose a feather sample for Silkies who do not yet have real feathers. This does not work with chick down. Please use blood spots on a plain piece of white paper or an index card for birds that are not old enough to have real feathers yet.

About Dominant White

Dominant White is a mutation in the PMEL17 gene. It interrupts the way black pigment is laid down in the feather, so a bird that is genetically black comes out white, often with a few black spots or flecks as a chick. Because it is dominant, a single copy will show, and it can be passed on by a bird you would never guess was carrying it.

This test tells you whether the bird carries the Dominant White mutation, which is the piece most breeders need before pairing a white bird into a colored pen.
