Find out if your bird carries Smoky (I᳿).

Smoky carries the same PMEL17 change as Dominant White plus a small deletion that puts some pigment back. On a black bird the result is a deep slate or dark blue instead of white, which is why smoky birds are so often mislabeled as blue.

What it reports:

  • Smoky (I᳿): 9-bp insertion plus a 12-bp deletion in exon 6 of PMEL17
  • Wild type (i): no Smoky mutation detected

How to collect a feather sample
  1. Pluck 3 to 5 growing feathers from the chest or back. Pull them out, do not cut them.
  2. Check that the soft quill tip is attached to each one. That tip holds the DNA, a cut feather will not work.
  3. Put each bird's feathers in their own labeled paper envelope or a small ziplock.
  4. Mail the envelopes to us in a regular stamped envelope.

Takes about a minute per bird. No vet visit, and nothing ships to you first.

*Please do not choose a feather sample for Silkies who do not yet have real feathers. This does not work with chick down. Please use blood spots on a plain piece of white paper or an index card for birds that are not old enough to have real feathers yet.

About Smoky

Smoky is a version of the same PMEL17 gene behind Dominant White. It carries the Dominant White insertion along with a small extra deletion that partly restores pigment production. Instead of a white bird you get a dark slate or deep blue one.

Because smoky looks so much like blue, breeders regularly pair it as blue and get results that make no sense on paper. Testing tells you which one you are actually working with before you build a pen around the bird.

Dominant White and Dun are separate mutations of the same gene and are sold as their own tests.
