Find out if your bird carries Dun (Iᴘ).

Dun is another change in the same PMEL17 gene, but instead of removing pigment the way Dominant White does, it softens it into a chocolate-gray dilution. It is easy to confuse with chocolate, which is a completely different, sex-linked gene.

What it reports:

  • Dun (Iᴘ): 15-bp deletion in exon 10 of PMEL17
  • Wild type (i): no Dun mutation detected

How to collect a feather sample
  1. Pluck 3 to 5 growing feathers from the chest or back. Pull them out, do not cut them.
  2. Check that the soft quill tip is attached to each one. That tip holds the DNA, a cut feather will not work.
  3. Put each bird's feathers in their own labeled paper envelope or a small ziplock.
  4. Mail the envelopes to us in a regular stamped envelope.

Takes about a minute per bird. No vet visit, and nothing ships to you first.

*Please do not choose a feather sample for Silkies who do not yet have real feathers. This does not work with chick down. Please use blood spots on a plain piece of white paper or an index card for birds that are not old enough to have real feathers yet.

About Dun

Dun is a mutation of the PMEL17 gene that dilutes black into a warm chocolate-gray. Two copies dilute further than one, so the same pairing can produce birds that look quite different from each other.

Dun is regularly mistaken for the chocolate gene. Chocolate is sex-linked and sits on a different gene entirely, so the two follow completely different inheritance patterns. If you are trying to work out which one is in your line, this test answers the Dun half of that question.

Dominant White and Smoky are separate mutations of the same gene and are sold as their own tests.
